Netflix’s recent episode of Black Mirror ‘Joan is Awful’ shows intertwined realities that is powered by a quantum computer using CGI (Computer Generated Imaginary). Salma Hayek and Annie Murphy who themselves existed inside the reality created by CGI and quantum computer but were unaware of it, until they destroyed the quantum computer itself, then they found their real self. These intertwined realities is like a Russian doll or nesting dolls (one inside the other) that goes deeper levels.
While this was a mind bending 30 minute episode for me and my wife to watch, but it led to question our own reality that we live day-to-day. If everything we see and interact in our daily life is ephemeral in nature, could there be higher realities that we actually belong ? Are we living in one of those realities like Joan in the Netflix episode? Living in this seemingly real world can we realise our true self ?
Infact, there is no such thing as reality, there is only Truth, as uttered by ancient sages. The rough translation for reality is ‘Maya’, that means illusion. The 6th century Indian philosopher Adi Shankaracharya said “Bhramam Satyam, Jagat Mithyam” in sanskrit, that translates to “Bhraman is the only Truth and this world is illusory”. Bhraman here refers to our own True Self.
Quantum computing is a major breakthrough in the history of humanity that could create unimaginable realities that we as humans get to participate in the near future. But the question remains, how do we pull back ourself when needed or atleast make attempts to realize our true self irrespective of the realities we immerse in ?
